Our new survey report, a follow-up to the October 2024 Ethics at Work: International Survey of Employees, reveals that employees are increasingly concerned about the ethical implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation in the workplace. The survey polled over 12,000 working adults across 16 countries, highlighting a workforce growing anxious about technology’s impact and a significant gap between these concerns and organisational preparedness.
The top concerns are:
- Misuse of AI for unethical behaviour (48%) – with a quarter of respondents saying they are “extremely concerned”
- Automated machines or AI replacing humans in the workplace (46%) – with 24% saying they are “extremely concerned”.
Other significant fears include losing interpersonal connections and discrimination, with over a third of employees troubled by all nine issues listed—a notable increase since 2021.
Additional concerns showing significant growth include increased levels of unethical behaviour due to new technologies and new workplace/skillset requirements due to digitalisation, both up by +5 percentage points.
Yet, organisational support is falling short. Only 30% of employees globally are aware of dedicated AI ethics guidelines or standards, compared to 71% who know about written standards of ethical business conduct. Awareness differs widely by sector – higher in ICT (54%) and finance (45%) – and by country, ranging from 68% in India to just 17% in Japan. This gap shows that many organisations aren’t yet helping employees navigate AI’s rapid rise responsibly.
