Social Media
Social media is now a part of people’s everyday lives. The benefits this can produce for companies are generally recognised: from sharing ideas and information with stakeholders to supporting good customer service. In particular, they provide SMEs with an affordable tool to complement their marketing strategy and reach a broader audience. However, it is crucial that everyone in your organisation commits to use social media in a responsible way, whether it is in a personal or professional capacity. Improper or incautious use can lead to serious reputational damage to your business and to your stakeholders.
IBE Guidance
- Invite your team members to use their judgement and common sense when using social media to avoid disclosure of confidential information or other inappropriate communication
- If you notice a post that falsely represents or damages your organisation, bring this to the attention of your team. Use it as a learning opportunity to explain why you believe that this kind of behaviour should be avoided
- Make clear that, unless specifically authorised to do so, it is not appropriate to share information and opinions about their organisation, as well as personal views on controversial matters, on social media
- Take the necessary steps to ensure the material you publish through social media is accurate, fairly stated and as appropriate, acknowledges sources.
