Megan will share her experience uncovering financial misconduct, the legal obstacles that often deter individuals from speaking out and how writing fiction, such as her widely acclaimed novel Bay of Thieves, has allowed her to address these issues creatively. Megan was recently featured on BBC Woman's Hour, where she discussed her journey and the inspiration behind her work. Chief Executive, Institute of Business Ethics
Lauren will join the Institute of Business Ethics, as its new CEO, in September 2024. Lauren has previously led corporate affairs and sustainability functions in large corporates, dealing with social, environmental and governance issues. Before joining IBE, Lauren led her own strategic advisory firm, working with clients at the intersection of sustainability, corporate affairs, culture, strategy and governance. Lauren has an Ecology degree from UCL, is a guest lecturer at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership and sits on the Board of Trustees of the Soil Association.
Author and Associate, Spotlight on Corruption
Megan grew up in mining towns in Australia, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, and Singapore and has an MA in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia.
Her debut, The Messenger, won the Bridport Prize for a First Novel as well as the Lucy Cavendish Prize. Megan is also a lawyer and an Associate at Spotlight on Corruption, an anticorruption NGO. She is interested in whistleblowing, having been a whistleblower when she worked in London’s financial sector.
Megan’s time as a lawyer inspired her second novel, Bay of Thieves, published in July 2024 in which two female lawyers living the high life in the South of France explore the limits of their own corruption when they find themselves at the mercy of their dangerous clients who would prefer to kill them than be exposed.
Megan represents Spotlight on Corruption in a coalition of NGOs and other public interest groups lobbying the government to bring in laws to stop the intimidation of journalists, academics and members of civil society by oligarchs and other powerful individuals who abuse defamation and libel laws to silence their critics.
